What do you love about DC?
DC is a city of opportunities. Because of the steady job market here, I've had the chance to reinvent myself a few times, and try working in different industries (art, food/beverage, non-profit organizations, owning a business). Just recently, I got my Real Estate License, and I'll be working with the Menkiti Group in addition to my artwork and Pleasant Plains Workshop projects, which is exciting!
The other day I counted that I'd lived in 7 neighborhoods in DC. Each time I've moved, I've loved getting into the nitty gritty of each neighborhood, from its history, to the best coffee shops, best bodegas, secret exercise classes, etc! It's a bit of an obsession to try to uncover a little magic in every inch of DC. It makes my head spin how fast things are developing all over the city..It's an exciting time to be here (also, I'm from here! did I mention that? I'm a townie...)
What projects are you working on now?
Ahh! This Summer is going to be fun. We have some great exhibitions lined up at Pleasant Plains Workshop. Save the date for May 16th when we host a tailgate party/bbq in honor of our current show by Ann-Marie VanTassell which features portraits of NASCAR fans. I'm also excited to be one of the local curators of the Our City Festival which runs from June 4-7 in and around MLK library, and highlights DC's rich culture. My friend Seshat Walker and I will be co-hosting an event on the evening of June 6th that highlights hand dancing and house music (together!). It'll take place outside of the library, and there will be presentations, instruction, and a dance party at the end (free!)
What makes you happy?
- Public Pools in the Summertime
- Thrift Shopping
- Working in the studio
- Connecting with neighbors/community through my storefront on Georgia Ave
- Getting a nice cocktail at a place like Rm 11 or 2 Birds, 1 Stone
- QT with my friends & loved ones
Favorite liquor store in DC?
Insider tip! While working at DC Arts Studios in Takoma Park, we would get wine for our events at this amazing liquor/beer/wine store on the DC side. It's called S & S liquors and it's on the corner of Blair and Cedar. The owner is AMAZING - he has great suggestions, good prices, and just the right amount of seediness ;) For $20 you can buy these mystery cases of beer..You get a cardboard box with no marks on it, and inside is a variety of craft beers, one offs, sometimes there's a lime-a-rita in there.. it's fun for parties when you have no idea what beer people like. If you become friends with the owner, he's got you! (people who know him will know what I'm talkin about!)
Favorite Michael Jackson song?
Right now it's 'Off the Wall'.. The song is my favorite thing to blast out of my car/ windows down, right when I'm getting out of work on a Friday. Classic MJ right there...
